Dear all,
When we first arrived at the project we were silent. An hour from the bohemian Barranco was poorly constructed houses. It seemed so alien. You view it on TV, in adverts, but you are never inside it. A few kids were there to greet us. They were excited and we were the main attraction. They asked us our names and hugged us. We soon relaxed and had a game of volleyball and football. They are amazing at sport here.

My name is Colm Pennie, I am from Northern Ireland,  I am 21 years old and at home I was unemployed. I couldn't find a job anywhere until  I heard about Platform2. I went onto their website and when I read what they were doing I applied straight away. I got accepted and I am currently in Lamatar, Nepal.

It is a beautiful place, lush green surroundings all around us and a breathtaking view of the...

I have a confession to make.

With that tantalising hook extended, I am going to tell you about anemia instead. Anemia - a low blood iron level - is typically seen as a minor ailment, a Western invention to keep us occupied in our stupor of wealth, much like cheese strings and Tamagotchi pets.

Anemia kills new mothers...

I’m not even a doctor, just a 22 year old teaching assistant from South Manchester. You might be wondering why I was so special to be sent to a developing country through no cost of my own. Well the truth is I’m not; I read about Platform2 in my local paper and like most, I believed it was too good to be true.

I looked into it...

'BOMBS' IN THE PINK CITY

The detonations are so penetrating I feel they have reset my heartbeat. One particularly boisterous explosion set car alarms howling down the street. Throughout the night the people of Jaipur, the Pink City, scream and shriek as we westerners sleep.

Relax - we are not in a...

Good Evening!

Things here in lil' old India have been go go go! Went away to Dharamsala / Mcleod on for the weekend. We managed to get a Taxi for the 90 minute journey for 800 Rs (approx 9quid) for 11 of us and then found a lovely little guest house for 120Rs p.p (like 1.50!!). Dharamasala is pretty busy but Mcleod...

Hi all, never written a blog before but I'm gonna try my best!
So, India, we are 1 week into our adventure now! After a lot of travelling & excitement of hectic markets, living with an Indian family and culture & Hindi lessons we have arrived at our destination, Himachal Pradesh in the Himalaya mountains, and what can I say apart from WOW!! From my bedroom window we have a view of the mountains and a view down the valley...

I go home in two days, sorry i have only just written :)

When i first arrived in Nepal it was a huge culture shock and completely different to anything i have ever known. I cried after 5 minutes of being in the country at some poor man begging outside the airport. It might have been the jetlag, but this was a huge huge shock to me & made me feel sick.

We spent our initial 4 days in Kathmandu for...

Nepal is such a colourful country with a kind natured population. My stay here has been a thoroughly enjoyable one. Living in a home stay has given me real insight into the Nepali way of life which although is hard work is so rewarding, they are very family-orientated people and religion is a big part of their life, i am now used to being woken up by my 'Ba' (Dad) praying and ringing a bell at 5 O'Clock in the morning! to bring god into...
